Kim's European Journey
The days are all beginning to blend together and I am having a hard enough time remembering what I did yesturday, nevermind what the date is.
Yesturday morning Rach and I took the tube into Notting Hill around 9 and walked to Portabello Market. The area is more low key than where we are. There are lots of shops, some of which are run down. There are lots of small townhomes with lots of flowers, which is about how I had imagined it. The goods at the market weren't that great. Mostly junk, but some antiques. Actually a lot of antiques, but they were the ones that looked like junk. The food at the market was amazing though. The vegetables looked so fresh that I am irritated with myself that I didn't get some now. But there were also stands with buckets full of baked goods. We split a ham and cheese baguette, which was a nice preview for Paris. The baguette was followed by a series of additional snacks. I'd rather not think about how much I ate at the market.
We met Nick, Ted & Heather back at the hostel and we took the train to Windsor. Windsor castle is the oldest inhabited castle in the world. It is in the town of Windsor, which is more like a village. It seemed to me to be a very typical English town, with a few streets of chain stores. The town sits along the Thames River, which also runs through London. The train ride was only about 45 minutes, which was ideal timing for lunch so we could stuff our faces again. But it was excellent.
The castle is not phenomenal on the outside. The queen still lives there on the weekends and considers it "her home". They also hold events regularly there when important people visit the queen. But it is really just a big grey medieval looking castle on the outside. The first place you walk into is St. George's Chapel on the church grounds. This was another amazing chapel where the queen regularly attends services, royal weddings take place, and knights are... knighted?. From there we breezed through the queen's dollhouse collection. The last part of the tour is through about 10 rooms in Windsor. They include the kings drawing room, a royal bedroom, the queens ballroom, and the waterloo room. The Waterloo Room is a magnificent dining room where a luncheon just took place last week. There is a lot of artwork and artifacts, such as Henry VIII's armour. Rachel and I nearly got trampled by a group of guards on our way out... apparantly they don't move for tourists. But we got some great pics..... and I got coconut ice cream on the way in (my favorite thing in the entire world)!!!
We took the train back to Windsor and went to a real authentic Italian place for pizza and wine. We went back to the Whitehouse pub for a beer and from there everyone (except me) went to an apparant "lame" club.... glad I didn't bother.
Ted, Heather, Rach & I grabbed a sandwich this morning and walked to Trafalgar Square. I think we are off to H&M store next. I need to find a black cardigan. Hopefully it will be an early night because we have to be at the station to go to Paris at 6am. Nick is still sleeping.... so he should be awake if no one else is.
Looking forward to an upgrade in rooms from our current situation tomorrow.....
