Kim's European Journey
It is really difficult to get anything accomplished in the afternoons here because it is so so hot. Yesturday, Nick, Ted & Heather went to the beach (apparantly it was nice) while Rach & I went to the Colosseum. We made the mistake of taking a tour. It is much smaller than I thought it would be. We then walked around other ruins nearby and saw the Arc of Constantine. Because it is summer, there is a lot of excavation going on. We had dinner at a nearby restaurant last night and got a free bottle of champagne... nice.
Today Rach & I got up early and went to the Vatican. We were a little late, so we waited in line for an hour. The Vatican is really split up into two areas... the Vatican museum and St. Peters Basillica. We went to the museum first where the Sistine Chapel is. I actually thought it would be smaller than it is, while Rachel thought it was a big church. Really its just a room. We found that the rest of the museum was pretty boring. We then walked to the Basillica and went through the tombs of the past popes. The main part of the church is completely stunning and huge. There is a huge alter... thing in the middle designed by Bernini. I guess its an enormous bronze gazebo. Anyways its truly a beautiful place. We ran into Heather Ted & Nick while we were there, so Im glad they made it.
Tonight is our last night in Rome. We wanted to go to the Trevi Fountain to throw a coin in, but we just dont have the time. Tomorrow we are off to Florence where Im looking forward to seeing Tuscany, "David", and wine country.
