Kim's European Journey
Italy has officially become my favorite country, thanks to Venice. Ive wanted to come here my entire life. It was the one place that I wanted to see before I died, and I'm so glad that we are here. Again, I wish we had more time.
Yesturday morning we visited the Uffizi Museum, which was definitely one of the best art museums we have seen. They have an extensive Da Vinci exhibit going on. It also contain the works of Botticelli "Birth of Venus"(a little disappointing) and "Primavera" (much more amazing). One of my favorite works there was Rafaels " Portrait of Pope Julius" and Titians "Venus of Urbino". It is a large museum, but it is a warm environment and very easy to maneuvre through. It would have been an even better visit if I hadnt gotten completely lost trying to backtrack... but thats another story.
We took our very last train to Venice, which lasted about 3 hours. And this is where the story becomes frustrating. Our hotel is on the mainland. The train took us to the island. Getting to the mainland was easy, but getting to the hotel was the most hellish hour of my life. When we finally got there 3 hours later, we were all ready to just go to bed. But we sucked it up and went to the island. Heathers mom had read about a wine bar in a magazine. Finding anything in Venice is a very difficult task being that there are no streets. Only canals and allys.
This horrible afternoon turned out to be the best night of the trip. We ordered a bottle of Reisling at an outdoor table and ate a plate of Italian cheeses and honey, then listened to a salsa band play while we were sitting under tea lights strung across the plaza. Phenomenal. Everyone needs to come to Venice. Everyone. The bus ride home was a pain, but we're going to forget about that part of the night.
This morning we went to the island of Murano that is known for their world famous glass making. We watched a demonstration and then proceeded to shop. Only a little... right? Thanks to Italian man with hot Italian shoes and designer jeans Fabrinzio, we got a sweet discount. I think.
We took the water bus to the Plaza San Marco where we procceeded to watch small children attack hundred of pigeons while their parents video tape the entire fiasco. Regardless, San Marco Basillica and the Doges Palace are stunning. We are still in San Marco and are headed to find a place with fettucine alfredo for our last night of Italian food. And probably lots of wine.
Heather leaves on the 11pm train to Switzerland, so this is really the end of the road for us! Rach and I are on a 10am train to London tomorrow. Hopefully it will be a relaxing couple of days.
Plan your trip to Italy right now. Dont think twice.
Most ignorant statement we have heard by an older couple at the Roman train station: "They really need to have a Pizza Hut and an Olive Garden to know what real Italian food tastes like".
Yea, that was embarassing.
