As I said in my previous blog, I was planning to move on early April; well after many plans and changes I went back to my word and left Cairns the beginning of April. I had already booked a flight from Cairns for the 9th May to head to Brisbane but I had been having difficulties with my boss where I worked for accommodation and I got sick of him so I knew it was time to leave. It was that or drive myself crazy. I have met some amazing people in Cairns and I loved my reef family but you have to leave eventually. I was very tied to that place considering my first day I wasn't so keen. Its funny how much a place can grow on you as well as the people you meet. I had a really nice birthday as well, went out for dinner with some friends and had a night out. A standard birthday celebration but nevertheless in good company.
So in the last week I was at the hostel I was deciding where to go and what to do. I have friends who were staying in Airlie Beach and I thought its not too far to go so I looked online where most travellers post if they want to share a ride somewhere and I found some people who were heading down the coast when I wanted to go. It was a very last minute decision, I found a ride for the next day, leaving Wednesday 3rd April and headed down the coast to Airlie Beach.
I made it to Airlie Beach safely the same day, it was about a 7 hour drive down south and we took a few stops here and there to change drivers and get petrol. It was pretty cheap, a lot cheaper than the bus. If I do any other trip like this I will definitely look into car shares instead of the bus, if I'd thought about it sooner I would have saved so much money.
I am now staying at a hostel where my friends are and I am working for accommodation at the bar and also house keeping. You have to do 14 hours a week to get free accommodation which is pretty good seeing as there isn't much else to do. Its been pretty wet and cold here, well not as cold as England as we can still wear shorts but recently I've been wearing shorts and a jumper and socks and pumps!! Its getting into Australia's winter now and as I head further south I will definitely start to feel the cold a whole lot more. Im not made for the cold, I have fully climatised to the hot weather; when I eventually come home I think I may freeze to death literally, more cold than Ive ever felt before!!
I am going to stay in Airlie until the end of April I think and then head down to Brisbane to see some friends :)
