Wednesday 30th November
For about a week now everyone had been going on about how I must visit Baron Falls; I had never heard of it nor knew anything about it, but I took their word for it and a group of us (Me, Hannah, Kazz, Digby and Maggie) borrowed a car (off a friend) and went for the afternoon. I didn't know this at the time but Hannah had already been to the falls and took us the most dangerous way possible to get the best view!
When we arrived we were walking along a railway track for a good 10 minutes and then she said 'now we have to go down this hill'. There is no other way to describe it than if you slipped you'd probably be dead, or in extreme agony! So anyway, as I am all about the adventure now being in Australia and all, I took my flip flops off and got on my bum and hands and crawled down the hill covered in trees, stones, rocks and probably spiders and snakes somewhere as well, although luckily did not see any or I would have freaked out big time!!
Anyway you'll be happy to know I didn't die as I have lived to tell the tale. When we got to the bottom, it was an amazing view! We were literally standing at the top of the waterfall, incredible! We then climbed over some rocks and got to the edge of the first fall,; by this point my legs were shaking!! With no hesitation Hannah dives straight into the water off an 8 metre high drop - we were all thinking the same thing - she is nuts!!
As I stood for about half in my bikini contemplating whether to jump or not, some other people appeared and decided to lend me a helping hand. They suggested we jump from a smaller height to begin with. We jumped hand in hand roughly from a rock the height of the tree I jumped back in the Uncle Brian's Rainforest Tour. That jump wasn't so bad in the end, still a bit scary though!
After I managed to rock climb out of the water and back to the top of the cliff, I really wanted to prove to myself that I could jump from the 8 metre high cliff top. With many attempts of looking over and assessing the best way to jump, I made Hannah hold my hand. After about the 5th count to 3 - we jumped!!! As I hit the water, everyone's faces were apparently like 'ooouch that's gotta hurt!' Yes, they were right, I came up to the surface and felt like I couldn't breathe; I landed in the water sideways and still have the bruises to prove it 8 days later! But none of that matters, I did it and I'm happy for pushing myself to do it!! :D
When I eventually climbed out and had a few minutes to catch my breath, we all decided it was a good time to leave and head back to Cairns. Little did I know, we then had to climb back up the deadly hill to get to the car!! Fortunately we were all helping each other up lending a hand when needed; although I was at the back so I just received all the help and didn't have to concentrate on dragging anyone else up with me!!
