Had an eventful two days in Mexico City. Jo, Bill and I left Tepotztlan early on Saturday morning with our friend and taxi driver Juan Carlos assuring us that he knew where the hotel to drop us off was. One must realize that Mexico city is big, it sprawls over the valley of Mexico and is home to over 24 million in the city district alone, also with a number of multi-lane arterial highways, latticed with one way streets all full of crazy Mexican drivers it isn't a place that is easy to find your way around. After an hour we'd driven the 80km from Tepoztlan to the outskirts of Mexico city. After two hours we'd stopped several times to ask directions and were now close to the city center, Juan Carlos still assured us it was under control. After two and a half hours I was starting to recognize streets that we were apparently doing laps on, we'd stopped for directions three more times and almost saw one guy giving us directions get run over. After three hours we'd found the street but it was unfortunately it was one way and the hotel was at the other end. After three and a half hours we still couldn't find a way to get to the right end of the street, it does sound simple but in Mexico city it just isn't! We were still stopping and getting conflicting directions from 'locals' and Jo and I decided that if we could find even the wrong end of the street that we'd get out and walk. Fortunately asking a couple of Federalies they pointed us in the right direction and we at last found the hotel and breathed a sigh of relief. I'm tempted to buy Juan Carlos a street directory for Christmas for the next time he had to go to Mexico City!
On Saturday Jo and I went to the Museum of Anthropology which was just amazing and we also went to the zoo and I got to see Panda's again (though their setting wasn't as nice as San Diego). On Sunday visited the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon at the Teotihuacan ruins just outside Mexico City, which were impressive. Mum you should be impressed that on the way back into town we visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is apparently one of the biggest Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
Met my group for the next two weeks who are mostly Aussies which I'm pretty stoked about.
