Matt and Ant's Travels
My second day on the island of Tongatapu was slightly less impressive then the first. We got up pretty early do go into the hospital and I went on my very first ward round. We got to see all the patients from the day before as well as the new patients on the ward. I ended up chatting away to one lady who spoke very good english only to find out later she was royalty! The main problem in Tonga is Diabetes and most patient in that hospital could have prevented having such drastic surgery if they had just kept their diabetes under control. It is very sad situation when they just dont understand the riskd of not taking their medication properly. We also did a ward round in the childrens ward which was quite good to watch. The afternoon was spent having my first proper look around the islands town centre...well it is actually just two streets with a couple of basic shops and a veggie market. We had met quite a few nice people from the different hostels in Nukualofa and so we all decided to go to the one and only bar on the island, the Bilfish. It is quite a nice place which had a live band playing and the music wasnt too outdated. The main thing that is so funny in tonga is he transvestites called Fakalitites. They are everywhere. Most of the time you dont even notice them and someone usually points out the adams apple. It is a very strange culture here but apparently its quite a normal thing for the men on the island as the women won't sleep with their husbands so they go looking elsewhere. Matt is certainly not very impressed. We went onto a club called dukes afer the Bilfish and he is constantly hit on in there whether it is the Fakalitites or the women they just can't get enough of him. It is so funny he just clings to me in the hope they wont cme near him but they still do!
