Southwestern Excursion
We had a nice afternoon at the Route 66 museum. There were several buildings on site & each had a different exhibit in them. The first building was the only one that had Route 66 information. The museum had several visitors, many from other countries. There were some men speaking German and a family from New Zealand. We started off the tour with a 15 minute movie on the history of transportation & Route 66. Then we went to the first building that had the Route 66 exhibit. There was audio of people who lived along route 66 or traveled route 66. They were telling stories of why it was special. One of the family stories had a Grapes Of Wrath feel to it. I enjoyed this building the most. The rest of the buildings were depicting history of Elk City & farming. They were interesting as well. It was hot! The southwest was in the middle of a heat wave. While we weren't at the center of it, we were near it. The heat index was 98 degrees. On the way out we asked one of the museum workers about a good place to eat. She suggested Splashburger, a locally owned restaurant. It was a great choice! Several selections of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches & salads. We hopped in the van & continued our trip westward.
