Hey Everyone!
Another blog from Bangkok, on our third visit! Unfortunately it hasn't lived up to its previous two visits and, after falling in love with Laos and Cambodia, we're itching to get out of Bangkok pronto! The good thing with having reached Bangkok is that we are able to send some things home, finally freeing up our bags which have become heavier and heavier with all the goodies we've collected. It's a weight off our shoulders - literally!!!
So our first day was consumed with going to the post office and checking out box sizes and prices etc. We also had a final look around the market stalls to see if there was anything else we wanted that could be sent home!! We managed to find a few extra little bits and bobs before packing our boxes and sending them home the following day. After walking around the streets of Bangkok all afternoon in the blazing heat and blaring noise, we were shattered and needed a day of chilling out. We sent our boxes off and then returned to our guesthouse to take full advantage of their free wifi, with the occasional bottle of water thrown in!
After three visits to Bangkok there really was no excuse for having not done any of the sights; we'd only managed to walk up and down Khao San Road and Rambuttri in the previous two visits!! We decided our fifth day would be a day of sightseeing, which would involve covering up to the elbows and down to the knees - great fun in the midday sun! We got up early on our last day and made our way to four of the main sights; first we were taken to the 'Lucky Buddha' a huge golden Buddha before jumping back into the tuk tuk and making our way to Wat Pho - a huge 46m long and 15m high Buddha which was lying down. Its feet had mother of pearl designs in them and were a pretty amazing sight. Finally, we made our way to Wat Phra Kaew which is in the grounds of the Grand Palace and houses the Emerald Buddha. Although it was boiling hot we were still made to borrow clothes in order to gain access to the Palace itself which was heavily guarded and had strict dress codes. With Sophie's full length skirt and Kie's sparkly green trousers we made our way into the grounds with hundreds of other tourists in the blazing sunshine. There were some beautiful things to see but we were more enthusiastic about getting out of the double layers and making our way back to the hotel to cool down.
We wanted to test out the overnight trains while we were in Asia, a not to be missed experience! Sadly the overnight train was fully booked, as we were unaware that the weekend was a Thai holiday. So we ended up doing it the usual way and getting the bus - luckily we slept all the way so, although it was uncomfortable, it was a mostly painless experience. We arrived in Chumphon this morning at 5am and waited to board our catamaran to Koh Tao.
We'll be updating you about Koh Tao soon, hope you're all well.
Lots of love Sophie and Kie xx
