Bologna turned out to be the unexpected highlight of our Italian tour. This was largely to do with the beautiful host we stayed with, Amelia, whose hostpitality, friendliness and just overall coolness made our stay so enjoyable and filled with great memories. We stayed here 3 days, the first night we were treated to homemade tortellini and an Italian Comedy show, it was difficult to understand but was still so entertaining, I was surprised at how much I got of this stuff, the improvisation was so good. I am so glad Amelia took us to the show, it stands out as one of those incredibly unique nights on this trip.
Bologna itself is a joy to wander, it is not a boastful city, it is a vibrant and easy going one, full of hidden beauty and wonderful food and a rich history in education (first uni in Europe). Cute little side streets, impressive churches and a calm spirit, bikes galore and a strong student vibe. Just a place worth spending time in really.
We walked up the five hundred and something steps of the Tower in the middle of town, the view from up there was a dreamlike pattern of redddy brown roofs and a star-like pattern of streets and weavings of life. The bike bells could almost be heard and the rolling hills danced around the city like protectors.
I almost forgot about the bolognese. Amelia, what a sweet girl, she made it for us on our last night and it was so perfectly done, al dente, with this amazing fusilli pasta that is unlike any I have ever tasted, so long and thick and like actual springs, I could have had five helpings. Oh, and the fresh mozzarella balls and oregano… too good to describe.
I am thinking that perhaps a book may be necessary to properly document and do justice to my experiences in Italy. Called "Eat Eat Eat", no pray or love necessary.
