WALK
8 mile circular, challenging is about right as described by the South West Coastal Walk.
A few steep ascents and descents on the coastal path with a few inland but the rest flat. A few places where the dogs needed to be on lead as the cycle path was close to lane and once by a field of sheep. Also most of the coastal path part has very steep cliff edges.
Still enjoyable with great views on the coast and roaming hills, a mix of Woodland, river and coast.
Worth noting that Pentewan is a private beach and no dogs allowed. It belongs to a large caravan park which is perfect if you don't have dogs. There are camping fields right by the beach.
For us the walk takes you past the entrance with the coastal path just at the side of the entrance walking adjacent to the lane climbing steadily. You are then quite high and you have to descent a very very steep grassy field and back up again the other side!
We popped down to the cove in the middle Portgiskey for a drink and lunch.
The views as you continue along the coastal path are great especially of Mevagissey, a lovely fishing harbour village.
Mevagissey was first recorded as a hamlet in 1313 although there is evidence of settlement from as far back as the Bronze Age.
There was quay from medieval times but it provided little shelter from the easterly gates and in 1774 and Act of Parliament was passed to allow construction of east quay and west quay. An outer harbour wall was added in 1888.
After a quick drink on the harbour front and some purchases in Fat Face we return through the village to the car. As about 4 we drive to Dodmin NT car park and walk down to a deserted beach to make the most of our last day.
We drive back along the narrowest lanes we have driven, each side the Banks knocking the wing mirrors! Russ did very well at reversing finding a passing space for a small camper van!
After 2 miles I felt rather ill, a nervous wreck!! Luckily we didn't meet any more until the road widened slightly with more passing points.
Blue skies as we return. Another clear cold night for us. No lights on camp site so night sky is fab, I seem to see it twice each night if you know what I mean!!
We have curry for tea, wash up before kick off at 8pm of MAn Utd match. Russ listening to it on radio at mo.
Heaters on full, to keep snug. Think I may leave fan heater on tonight as well as halogen and pop my ear plugs in!
The camp beds we have invested in are so much warmer than an air bed, very comfy to.
This time of year with temperatures falling below 5 degrees you need a thermal layer, warm pjs, warm socks. A fleece under the sleeping bag and one on top.
A beautiful area on the Roseland with many walks from the camp site and very safe for the dogs along the coastal paths.
