Today's walk
From the tent along SW Coastal Path passing Towan beach, Porthbeor Beach onto St Anthony Head. We spent time here looking at the military fort, lighthouse and panoramic views across Falmouth Bay. We then carried on along the SWCPath which takes you up to River Fal to Percuil river and creek back to Porth. The other side is St Mawes and its quays. We pass through spring flowers on the fields and woodlands. Just as you enter the creek at The Place we find St Anthony Church which is open so do go inside.
At Porth we then head down to Towan beach and back along the SWCPath to the tent. 10.5 miles
DOG FRIENDLY - very! virtually all off the lead with a safe coastal path with very few spots of over hanging grass. We have now trained our dogs so that when we say A A in a loud quick voice they stop and look at us. They then come to us and get a treat! So if we see them approach an edge it's A A!!
There are toilets at the military base and an NT car park. From here you can walk short distances to the hide and lighthouse. The lighthouse is now privately owned and available to rent. It is still in operation with a white light every few seconds.
The church at The Place which is where you can catch a ferry across to St Mawes. It is also home to the great house called Place House (built in 1851). We past the front of this a couple of days ago. A French chateau in design it sits magnificently with St Anthony Church behind it.
We saw the lady of residence on a motorised chair with her black lab leaving the house along its long drive away through the large grassed area in front of the mansion. She came past the church and on her return we saw she had been to collect fresh apple blossom from her orchard.
How delightful to live in such wonderful surroundings. We saw her again and spoke for a minute, how we wish we had been invited for a cuppa, would love to see the inside of the chateau!
Maybe one day it will become NT owned and we will ............
The church is actually connected to the chateau and sits directly behind it. It is now looked after by a Church Restoration and protection society. We took it in turns to go inside. I read the beautiful engravings on the walls of the Sprye family who in turn added to the wall with more elaborate memorials, it is certainly worth a visit and time inside. It was built in 1150.
Outside you can see a small graveyard but as you walk the path you can see more graves half hidden amongst the spring flowers and over growth.
Porth as said NT toilets and 2 happy chaps you run a snack service from a vintage truck in the courtyard.
A very short walk down to Towan beach, dog friendly all year, white sands and shingle, rock pools and glorious aqua seas, truly beautiful.
My feet now after 3 days of great walking ache! Not my legs just my Feet! Think it is time to buy new gel insoles!
Russ bless does the morning washing as I undo the ruck sacks and then join him with the dogs and go,for a shower. The site is a lot quieter now with many leaving.
Russ cooks tea chicken and veg in a creamy sauce. I wash up,whilst he showers. I love the simplicity of camping life, really do.
2015 now, glass of wine , tent as snug as a bug with 2 heaters! Alf and Karl are shattered, fast off!
