Third and last day in Bangkok.
Thought I should try and do some of the official sightseeing stuff today before I leave. Up early, even had a little swim in the pool. A rule of mine..if you check into a hotel with a pool you should use it once to get you monies worth!
Then Off to see the Grand Palace and Bangkok Wat. Took the river boat again and stopped off in a llittle place just by the boat stop for breakfast. Into the Palace and placed was absolutely mobbed. Huge amount of Thais. Mainly ladies all dressed in Black.....decided to find out why.....did...apparently the princess, aged 82 had died a few days early and was laying in rest I think in the palace, or at least this is where it seemed the whole of the Female bangkok population were heading to pay their respects that day.
My first thought was that who ever had a shop selling black dresses and head scarves must be making a killing.....ha ha ha ...I think thats funny!
Well it made the place even more manic than ever...the place was also overrun by loud mouth Americans. I did seriously wonder if they had bussed them in overnight from Seim Reap/Angkor Wat just from my personal pleasure! My hatred for Americans is growing daily.....I know Buddha and peace to all etc, but when your surrounded by these loud mouthed imbaciles who think they own the world, well it just grates....
Still, after than little depression, got on with the visit....a tenner or so to get in and for once I decided to hire one of those " strap it around your neck, put the speakers in your ears and it will tell you the history in 15 different languages thingies". Mainly because as mentioned earlier I had lost my Lonely Planet book. The thing was damn good, once I got it out of Italian (Dont even get me started on the Italians!) and so I waltzed around the buildings, beautifully oblivious to what any one else was saying, listen to my portable friend and taking snaps...snaps not too good though as still having trouble holding anything in my right hand. Yes boys...its affecting more that just the holiday snaps!!
Anyhow, the place was breaktakingly beautiful as some of you will already know or will see from my excellent photographs when I get around to posting them and spending 3 hours in an internet cafe waiting for them to upload.
Then it was off across the river to the Wat something....I dont know now, sorry...but it was a huge wat and you could climb it which I did and get some great views of the city. it was a real contrast as to the right was the new business district..a mini manhattan, and to the left was older Bangkok with what looked like riverside slums...
To be honest that was enough for me for one day again, and so went back to the hotel feeling a little guilty. Know I should have done some more, but simply couldnt.
A night out again for something to eat, and went on Ko Sao Road and ate off a street corner restaurant. To see this old man, well about my age, and the things he could do with his wok were trully fantastic. It was like watching a master at work. Mesmerising. I had something like Chicken and prawn in chilli and noodles with 2 cokes. came to a total of under a quid!
Watching all the people go by was fun too, although too many of them looked like they had been evicted of Greenhan Common 15 odd years ago and just been wandering up and down this road slowly getting totally tatooed.......there are some strage people around, and most look european?
Tommorrow..Phuket! Beach!
