Shona & Nikki's big trip!
Woo! We have made it to Mexico! We travelled by bus all the way to the border, stopping over in a town near the border for the night. It was actually really quick and took us just two days to reach Tulum, Mexico. It was the first time we've crossed a border by land, we've now done it by plane, boat and land! We had to get off the bus at the border, get our passports stamped, walk acroos the border and get back on the bus again.
We changed to a Mexican bus at the town of Chetumal, the buses here are so much nicer, our first proper coach! With air-conditioning and reclining chairs! Yay!
We met some English girls along the way who were doing exactly the same journey from Belize so we hooked together and got a place together here in Tulum, luckily we met some random woman who told us about this great hostel (much better than the one in the guide book), the 4 of us are sharing a lovely cabin (with a/c and hot water- first time we've had either in 7 weeks! V.exciting!) in a place called Ranco Tranquilo which is a bit like a hippy commune, the guy who runs it is an old hippy like man, there is a large communal kitchen/living room area, and they provide food for us to cook our own breakfasts - all for about a fiver a night - bargain!
Where we are, Tulum, is on the southern end of the Yucatan peninsula, it consists of a small town, a beach and some Mayan ruins.
Yesterday we spent the morning on the beach, which is absolutely beautiful - white sand as soft as talcolm powder and amazingly turquiose water - I have never seen that shade of blue before! It was also really empty, almost had the whole beach to ourselves!
In the afternoon we wandered to the ruins, which are right by the beach. They are much more modern in style than the ones we've seen before. The architecture is not quite as interesting but as they are located on the cliff-top with the beach and sea as a backdrop the views are really stunning!
Tonight we're going to try out the night-life as its the birthday of one of the girls we're sharing with. Then tommorrow we may do a tour of some underwater caves!
