Shona & Nikki's big trip!
Hey! Have just spent lovely few days on Caye Caulker, Belize.
So, after leaving the town of Dangriga we caught a bus (yet another used American school-bus) to Belize City. It was a bit of a drive but cool because a lot of it was in the beautiful mountains where we drove through the misty rainforests whilst listening to Belizean music (Punta) on the way, which sounds much more carribbean than latin, a bit like soca but even faster! The driver played it (loudly) for the most of the journey.
The hustle and bustle of Belize City was a bit of a shock to us at first after growing accostomed to the laid back ways everywhere else. We were warned that it was pretty dangerous and scary there but we didn't feel particularly at risk. It was a bit dodgy and there were plenty of creepy men (like most places in the world!) but actually it just reminded me a bit of Ridley Road in Dalston! Maybe thats why we didnt feel too scared. It was interesting to see a bit of city life here in Belize anyway.
We stayed right by the river with a balcony over-looking it and a busy bridge, which was great. We spent a day wondering the streets and buying a few souvieners (well, earings really).
The next afternoon we caught a water-taxi to Caye Caulker, which is really pretty. its actually two islands now since an earthquake split in two, the south island is pretty wild and everyone lives or stays on the north island where we are now. It is a village of really colourful buildings, each one a different colour, sand-roads and no cars! Everyone either walks, rides bikes or uses golf-carts (even taxi's). It is a bit touristy but nice all the same.
Upon arriving the first people we saw when we got off the boat was the couple we shared a room with in Placencia! Which was funny! They showed us a great back-packers hostel to stay in, right by the sea. The first couple of nights we stayed in a dorm which was fine but then we saw where they were staying upstairs in a whole apartment! For the same price! So as soon as they left we took that! Its great, we have our own kitchen, a king-size bed, a living-room and a balcony with hammock over-looking the sea! Bliss!
The first night here we tried out the nightlife - which we discovered is a bit dead, but we did meet these old rasta guys who showed us around the bars, which was quite funny - one of them had his really long dreads tied together, sticking up straight in the air above his head (made him at least a foot taller!), dont know how he made them stand up like that but he looked hilarious!
Then on Sunday we went on a snorkling trip via sailing boat, which was really nice. We saw lots of coral, fishes, a turtle, and some huge sting-rays - I even dived down and stroked one - slimey! AND we swam with sharks!!!! They were only nursing-sharks (which means they dont try to eat us) but I was still pretty scared at first! But after a while they wernt scary at all and I was chasing them about - even the 6ft ones! It was a really nice day, after a few snorkling stops we sailed back whilst sipping on rum punch and listening to reggae - ahhh that is the life!
Well, Ive got to go now as we are about to catch a boat back to the mainland where we are going to start the journey up to Mexico, which is only a few hours away I think, not too sure where we're heading mind you - just going with the flow!
