Copenhagen (Kobenhavn) was our last official destinaton before returning "home" to Amsterdam. ANother beautiful arrival in a new city. We passed turbine farms as far as the eye could see - Denmark is one of the world leaders in wind and alternative energy development - what a sight!
We took a comparatively short tour of the main city sights - The famed Little Mermaid statue in the harbour (101 years young this year!), the Royal palace, the changing of the guards, Tivoli Gardens, and a bus tour of the city centre. We wanted to explore the city on our own, so we took a few hours to follow our noses to the main shopping/pedestrian promenade and passed by some absolutely incredible architecture along the way. Copenhagen has one of the lengthiest histories we've experienced thus far on our trip. Christian the 4th (henceforth known as C4) was the "Builder King", for good reason. He built Copenhagen in the 16 hundreds into a cultural hub with stunning architecture, cathedrals and fortifications - those pesky Swedes weren't always the kindest neighbours!
Yes. We dropped some Kroner in Denmark. Skirts, desses, sweaters, jewelry, souvenirs, home decor....and tasty Danish treats. Perhaps not what you might assume. We didn't have pastries, we stumbled upon a local chocolatier that specialized in high-end chocolate and nut delicacies.
The day was short, but very well spent. We saw many of the main attractions, and experienced so much danish culture. The people are beautiful. The streets are pristine. The air is sweet (like, perfume!) The happiest place in the world didn't disappoint. We highly recommend a trip to Copenhagen. Two thumbs way up from the trippin' Sheppards! Particularly for architecture, history, style, and home decor afficianados.
We are back for one more sea day today. We haven't neded our sea legs too much this trip, but we certainly do today. A bit choppier, a bit windier, and heading around a storm is making us feel a bit like zombies with vertigo. All safe, and just hours from port!
We have added some pictures for your viewing pleasure,
love to all,
Chris and Jude
