We boarded a bus early in the morning, and crossed the border into Belgium. It took about 2 hours to get to our first Belgian stop-over, Antwerp.
It is a VERY hostoric place, with a stunning square surrounded by rows of old Guild buildings. Each building is at leat 6 stories high, with gold decoration along the windows and rooftops. It started to POUR just as we arrived - which gave us an excuse to run to the Church and have an indoor tour! This is the birthplace of Reubens, and so the church was not only incredibly ornate and ENORMOUS in size, it was also decorated with famous Reubens religious paintings. It's a stunner.
Next to Brussels, or Bruxelles. A hyrbrid city. They speak French, Deutch, Flemish and English. The best of all worlds! I'm not totally sure WHAT I was expecting, but Brussels absolutely shattered my expectations. It has probably the most breathtaking marktsquare of any city in Europe. It's actually a Unesco hertige site. The Gold! The Size of the buildings! The church! Honestly, it's really hard to describe. But Mom and I were stopped in our tracks, quite literally, and spent the entire time looking up, with our mouths open.
And so in Belgium? Do as the Belgians do. We put aside our diet for the day and indulged in Belgian Wafels! A crispy, thick, warm wafel with melted chocolate and fruit topping - we both said it was probably the best thing either of us ever eaten. Seriously...ever.
after touring the city to see all of the important government sites (EU, UN) we made our way "home" to Amserdam. Quite a day! We had our share of North Sea weather changes throughout, but it didnt ruin the afternoon... nor did it stop us from taking pictures.
