Wow what an awesome place to have an experience packed holiday!
Cambodia has been an amazing and our tour leader is awesome - super proud of his country and ensuring we experience it to the full including its cuisine (in the last 2 days I've eaten frogs, snake, eel, tarantula, ants ... they all tasted like chicken!).
We've been to Angkor Wat which is the ruins from as early as the 9th century near Siem Reap and today in Phnom Penh to see the museum that was formerly a Khmer Rouge prison and then out to the killing fields - all very sad when you think it was only 28 years ago that the Khmer Rougle cleared Phnom Penh of its 3 million residences telling them that there where bombs coming and sent them to work in the fields for 10 hours a day with limited food - if you got sick and needed to go to hospital you would end up being killed for being slack and if you were in the former government or consdered a KGB or CIA agent or similar then you and your family were sent to the prison and tortured - 17,000 were killed there and 2-3 million all up. The killing fields are quite chilling as they allow you to walk around the fenced off empty mass graves - they've removed the large bones and skulls but around the paths you can still see more bits of bones, clothes and even teeth :-(
There were only 7 million people in Cambodia at that time so half the population are under 18 ... the children are gorgeous and very cute but constantly asking for money as it is such a poor country - some may desperately need it others just try to make the most of the westerners. We're asked not to buy from them or give them money though as it encourages there parents to keep them out of school and selling stuff to us instead.
Tomorrow we're off on a boat trip down the Mekong to Chau Doc in Vietnam.
Will post photos one day ... and still no mobile phone global roaming ... grrr!!!!
