Shaun on the Road
Hey all, here is yet another update.
Flew into South Africa from Nairobi on the 19th of May. I actually flew into Jo'burg, but everyone who I have ever talked to told me to get out of there as soon as possible, so I got the next flight to Cape Town. All I saw of Jo'burg was the airport, and that was brand new, but I think that that may be the best part of the city.
I spent three days in Cape Town. The first day I was just hanging out. I was still tired from my trip on Kilimanjaro. The next day I met this English guy and we rented scooters and rode from the city to the Cape of Good hope, which is almost the most southern tip of Africa, but not quite. It is a very nice drive, if not a little confusing for me. They drive on the left side of the road over here, so I made sure to let the Brit go first so that I could follow his lead. But this is a must do if you are ever in the Cape Town area.
The next day I met a Sweed in my hostel and we hiked up Table Mountain. Table Mountain is a 1000 meter mountain that is basically right in the middle of the city (or more appropriately the city is right around the mountain). We climbed to the top, which was not an overly difficult climb, but a fun one. There were lots of people going up and we both had a good time. Great views from the top as well. You could see Robben Island clearly. Robben is were Nelson Mandela was imprisoned there for 27 years.
From Cape Town I was off to a town called Knysna, which is on the South Coast. I rented a bike one day and had a great ride along the coast to a huge and virtually uninhabited beach. The following day I went Sand Boarding. I had done this in Peru, but did much better here in South Africa. The board was by far superior here to the one in South America, so I think that is the reason. But again, sand gets EVERYWHERE when you go sand boarding, so if you ever go, make sure you shower very quickly afterwards.
Yesterday I met up with Jade, Michael, and Jared, some friends that I have here in South Africa. I am going to be crashing at their place for the next few days before heading on to Durban and then off to Hong Kong on the 4th. That's all for now, thanks for reading and keep those e mails coming.
