Shaun on the Road
I am sorry all, I just checked my last postcard and realized that it was dated the 16th. That is almost 2 weeks. It sure doesn't seem like it has been that long. Here is a little update as to where I have been over that time and what I am up to in the future.
I stayed in Munich for 3 days. I saw some of the city, took a tour of the BMW plant (I guess I missed the tours that I took of various plants while at DeVry, so I had to get another one in), saw a very good ballet (my first) and saw a very ominous and very, very real Dachau. When stepping into the rooms with the ovens, it really became real. I just had to stop and look at them for a while, picturing the feverish activity that must have gone on there. Now there is nothing but silence. Very moving to say the least.
I met a couple of Canadians in Munich that I hung out with a bit too. Always good to see people from home (well, Toronto, but close enough).
Took the night train up to Berlin and stayed there for three days. I went to see the must see things in Berlin, like the wall, the Riechstag (Parliment), Brandenburg (sp?) gate, and took in 2 symphony performances there. I actually went to buy a ticket on the second night and met a German lady of about 65 who had an extra one. She spoke a fair amount of English so we had a great time enjoying the music and each others company. She was dressed to the nines, so I felt a little out of place in my hikers and zip off camp pants, but you don't need a tux to enjoy Mozart. Oh, and if you want to do something interesting, ride the Berlin subway after midnight on a Saturday night. There are more mohawks, booze fumes, crazy British men (yes, British), and bar stars than you can shake a stick at.
Went to Gdansk Poland for a couple of days after this to try and search out some family heritage. Unfortunatly (as I found out after I had hunted around all day) all of the people in the area are recent immigrants, brought in by the Soviets after WWII. Apparently the Soviets liked to move people around. I guess they wanted all people in the communist world to have a variety of experiences living and cultural experiences around the world, so they moved them around (yeah, right). Anyway, I found the towns I was looking for (I think) but there was nothing left that I could find. Oh well.
I headed back to Berlin where I hung out for a day and then took the night train to Paris, where I am now. Thus far I have been to Versille (sp again), and seen the Tower, the Arc, and Notre Dame. I also spent a surprisingly long time in the Louvre, especially for a redneck like myself. I especially like the Greek sculptures, especially when I know what myth goes along with the work. Some very interesting stories.
I am heading to Vimy Ridge, the famous Canadian battle of WWI, tomorrow, and then am heading to Barcelona with a stop in southern France. From Barcelona I head off to Athens, where I will be touring the Greek Islands for a few days before going to England. I promise to keep the site updated more regularly from now on and avoid the big gaps.
Also, I appologize for the lack of picutures on the site of me, because I know that all of you want to see what I look like again. If I can, I will get someone with a digital camera to snap a few pics so I can post them. I will try.
