We had an amazing time in the beautiful country of Fiji way back in august 2010! I am so behind in this blog!!! It was one of the most beautiful places- kind of like Mauritius and the people were lovely too!
We spent 4 glorious days in 5 star luxury - private chef, ocean views from our villa and so on....however unlike all the other guests, we did not opt for the tourist taxi (very pricey) to the villas from Nadi, instead, we opted to do it the backpacker way- by local bus- you get such a better experience of the real fiji this way and the 2 hour journey cost us pennies.
We had the best night when we went for dinner at a fijian family's house- it was amazing to see the traditional way of life and cooking in the traditional fijian lovo (earth oven). Brilliant food and company. Also tried the fijian drink- Kava- its made from the root of a pepper plant- looks and tastes like muddy water and makes your mouth go super numb!!!
For the next 4 days of our time in Fiji, we wanted to get to an island...we opted for robinson crusoe island as its close to the mainland and we were short for time. The owner of the villas got his friend to drive us to the nearest town and then we took the local bus- we were told to get off at the police station and wait there for our lift to the boat for the island. So we turned up at the local police station, they were lovely and let us sit on their porch while we waited for our transport! We then got a boat to the island- the boat was full of food and drink supplies as there are no shops on the island.
Arriving at Robinson Crusoe Island (RCI) we were greeted by fijian men & women singing us onto their island- it was beautiful. I have truly found my paradise island- felt like part of shipwrecked! There were only 5 of us staying on the island, plus the lovely staff. You can walk round the entire island and it was just perfect. The group we were with were brilliant- had such a brilliant time. Spent the days eating, drinking cocktails, sunbathing, reading in hammocks, kayaking (though i did send out a search party for steve one day as i freaked- he'd been away for ages and i couldnt see him for miles).
We joined in a few kava ceremonies with the locals and sing songs on the beach in the evenings, as well as crab catching activities at night- scary stuff!
Loved RCI, was so sad to leave! Would love to return to Fiji one day and do lots of island hopping.
