Hola chicos We now find ourselves in Potosi, at 4,000 metres apparently the highest town in the world (La Paz is the highest capital). Certainly high enough to induce a decent headache until the body adapts! We now realize how spoilt we were in Argentina - we caught an 11 hour bus from the border town (Villazon) to Potosi with all the locals and were a little sad when we didn?t receive the usual meal with wine as we received a few times in Argentina. Our tickets told us that there would be a TV and there was, but the screen was smashed and the TV was being used as a rubbish bin. Also pleasing was the fact that some of the windows wouldn?t close which, when travelling at altitude isn?t all that comfortable! We were told that we would arrive in Potosi at 6am but suddenly stopped at 4am. Sarah and I kept sleeping and then at around 5 asked the driver what was going on and he told us that we were in Potosi, we had arrived early! Potosi is famous for its silver mine, though perhaps infamous for the number of people that have died from working these mines. Different books suggest different numbers but it seems to be in the region of 8 to 9 million people have died over 3 or so centuries. Other quotes state that 50 people die per day continue to die from the effects of working in these mines. Aside from the mines, it is a beautiful town with amazing colonial architectrure, an abundance of churches and street markets. The people here are so short! They also seem to be fascinated with my head. A few people have stopped to question me on my preference for a shaved head and they can?t stop looking at it. One lady did comment ?bonita cabeza?- nice head - so that pleased me. Shane y Sarah
