Hola folks,
Today we head for a place called Puno in Peru which is also on Lake Titicaca, but firstly we will update you with what we have been up to since leaving La Paz.
We caught a 4 hour tourist bus to destination Cocacabana which is a small village set on the shores of Lake Titicaca. The ride was pretty scenic and included crossing part of the lake with the bus on a boat that looked like it was going to sink under its weight! (check out the photo).
Copacabana is at about 3800m. It has little cobbled streets with loads of restaurants for the gringo and lots of markets selling llama wool hats and clothes. We also got to witness the locals parked outside the town church (which takes up about 2 blocks of the town) decorating their cars and buses with paper flowers and getting them blessed by a monk in brown robes throwing holy water over the engines! There were literally about 30 cars lined up waiting for this event!
The other sight we witnessed was on Cerro Cavario (3966m) where they have 7 stations of the cross and people go up and pray and take decorations, rocks, beer, light candles etc to the Virgin Mary.....its the first time we have seen the Bolivians here in an orderly queue. Usually they just push.
We took the boat across to Isla del Sol for a night (where they believe the sun was born). The island has some old ruins that we visited and a good walk down the middle of the island from North to South that took us about 4 hours to complete. We had great views of the surrounding lake on both sides and beautiful colours of red, pink and white rock and rubble on the island against a clear blue sky. It was great to get out and do some walking and feel a bit remote and away from the world.
Returning by boat to Copacabana we now have to catch the bus across the border to Peru.
Will write more from the other side of Lake Titicaca shortly.
Lots of love
Sarah and Shane xx
