We hiked up the mountain again today and this time it was made a wee bit easier since I had been up the day before and had some tunes! We started off the day doing pretty much the same thing, chopping down guava plants big and small on the other side of the steep mountain. It rained for most of the morning so luckily I brought my rain jacket. We had a break and then chopped down three larger guava plants with our machetes which was harder since the branches are not easy to break off with the semi dull machetes. Then we had to moved large tree branches to the side of the fence. I think they will be planting corn in the area to eventually feed the tortoises that live on the highlands. Either way, another hard day working and exhausting since your literally chopping away at these plants for hours.
We then went into town to check into changing my flight to fly out of San Cristobal and also catching a cab to lobaria, a beach nearby. The volunteers and Jose from the Hacienda snorkeled for an hour or so which was really nice and again took a cab back into town to watch one of the World Cup games. We went out to dinner as a group back in town after getting cleaned up and had a set menu of beef soup and fish for the main course. I received a phone call today from Vanessa, the coordinator in Quito, saying they were sorry I wasn't picked up at the airport and gave me a free dinner out for tonight. That was really nice of them. Dinner was good at luckys in town too and was fun since all the volunteers went out together. Megan and I decided we shouldn't go to Isabella because we couldn't change our flights. It would cost too much money too. Everyone asked if we could stay until Friday too so I plan to leave Sat afternoon to catch the ferry to go to Santa Cruz for a few days and head back to Puerto Moreno on Monday to catch my flight by Tuesday. I'm having a blast and meeting so many fun and interesting people from all over the world. It's not uncommon to meet someone who is traveling for 5 months and quit their job. I just met one couple who is traveling for 1 year and they sold all of their belongings before traveling. They aren't sure if they will go back to Australia or set roots somewhere along the way. So awesome!
