Sara's Journey
Greetings!
hope all is well back in Blighty! We have been in Saigon for 3 days now and are leaving tomorrow for Cambodia (7.30 am start!).
The first day we got here, we were all absolutely knackered after the 12 hour bus journey and no sleep the night before! we arrived in Saigon at 5.30 am which was quite mad as we couldnt find a hotel to stay in as most of them were closed! However we eventually managed to find one which had a T.V and air con, what bliss! We had some noodle soup for breakfast (?!!) then decided we were not capable of anything that day except for sleep! We went to bed and arose from our 'pitts' at 1pm. We then just chilled out with a brisk walk around the 'town' and some internet use! Jen and i managed to pull ourselves together and go to the cinema (what hard work!). We went to see Mission Impossible 3 which was quite a good film but the vietnamese have different ideas about 'silence' in the cinema and mobile phones kept going off and people were actually answering them and having conversations during the film (dad-you would have gone mad!).
We decided to be a bit more adventurous the next day and went to the War reminents museum in the afternoon which was so emotional and a real eye-opener. It was mainly photos of the Vietnam war and the victims of chemical warfare by the Americans. The museum also had an area which showed how the Vietnamese were tortured and kept imprisoned with actual models of the prison cells referred to as 'cages'-the name says it all. Holly, Ben and jenny went to a waterpark in the morning and i went to the local theme park as i wasnt in the mood for water slides! The theme park was a very strange experience as i seemed to be the only Westerner there and i was constantly stared at all day like something from a freak show which made me feel a bit uneasy. Any way i went on a few rides which included a giant Ferris wheel which seemed very old and unsafe but i made it out alive!
There was also a large part of the park dedicated to sculptures made from china cutlery (rice spoons, bowls etc) and they were amazing-i took quite a photos so u can all see them!
Today we went to the Cu Chi tunnels which was used during the war with America as a hideout for the Vietnamese. They are a network of tiny tunnels that stretch for over 250km! They are pitch black and very claustrophobic! Jenny and Holly ventured down a few of the tunnels but i was too scared as i thought i might faint with the lack of oxgen! When i saw their faces when they came out im glad i didnt go in as its sounds quite horrific!
Any way better go now and pack my bag for our trip to Cambodia tomorrow!
Take care
Love Sara
