Sara's Journey
Hello again!
Well what can i say?! The Fraser Island trip was certainly one of those once in a life time events that i will never forget!
Fraser Island is about a 40 minute ferry ride from Hervey Bay where we stayed for the night before getting up at 6.00 am (aaggh!) to have our briefing for the trip! We had to watch some videos about what to do on and what not to do on the island and we also had to watch a video about how to deal with Dingoes if you see one as Fraser Island has the largest population of wild dingoes in the world! They are really quite scary animals as they have attacked and killed a few children in the past and the last attck occured on Fraser Island in 2001 where a 9 year old boy was taken from his tent and killed. So as you can imagine it was a little worrying!
We then got put into our groups which consisted of 10 people. The next stop was the camping shed where we had to gather all our camping gear and put it in the 4 wheel drive. Fraser Island is the only island in the world whcih is completely made out of sand so its only possible to get rouund it by driving a 4x4 truck! Only people who were over 21 and held a driving licence were able to drive it so that meant out of ten people, Jenny, me and another Irish girl where the ones who could drive!
We then went to the supermarket to get our food stores for the three days, we ended up buying enough food to feed a small country!
Next stop was the ferry terminal and then 40 minutes later we disembarked the ferry onto Fraser!
It was so funny to drive on these tracks made out of sand and also driving in 4 wheel drive as the truck felt completely out of control, the back wheels spin all over the place! It was hilarious as the tracks are all off road and so bumpy, some of the dips we had to go down were insane! All the other people in the back were crashing their heads on the ceiling of the truck!
We drove to some of the suggested beauty spots, one being Lake Mackenzie which is a freah water lake that you can swim in as the sea surrounding Fraser is off limits as its full of man eating sharks! The Lake was absoultey breath takingingly beautiful, ill put the pics up asap!
We then had to set up camp before it got dark! We pitched the tents and started to cook our dinner which was so funny as i havent been camping before so cooking an aussie style bbq with a camp stove was rather amusing but it actually turned out really nice and yummy! We all sat round and drank our wine and beer and then went to bed about 9 pm as theres not much to do when you have no electricity and stcuk on the middle of an island!
The next day we packed up camp and went off on our little journey again! Driving a 4x4 truck on the beach was a surreal experience and one i will never forget, the beach is 75 miles long so you can really floor it! Driving along with the waves crashing about a metre away from you is mad!
We visited a 70 year old ship wreck on the beach but had to depart rather quickly as the tide was coming in fast and obvioulsy you cant drive in the sea!
We pitched camp up again and cooked another nice yummy meal, we stayed up a bit later the second night, till 10pm, what a treat! We had to leave the next day so we got really early to make the most of the day, we visited another lake and then when back to Lake Mackenzie for a final swim, we also saw a dingo wandering around but it stayed away from us which was a relief!
We got back on the ferry at 4 pm and tehn unloaded all our camping gear. We were all really shattered after two nights camping but Jen and i had to get on an over night bus journey to Airlie Beach as we had a sailing trip to go on the next day, we were absolutley knackered when we reached Airlie Beach!
All in all i had an exellent tiem camping, it was so funny and i felt like a little child again when i used to camp in my back garden!
I will update you when i return from the sailinf trip around the Whitsunday islands!
Take care
Love Sara
