We woke from the nice camp ground to press on with starting some more of The Great Ocean Road. The first stop was going to be London Bridge but we found another before then which was called The Grotto.
The Grotto is a nice little detour. Some stairs take you down to the base of the cliff which has a little archway and a pool of water at the bottom. It would make a nice little swimming hole in the summer if you could get down there of course lol. London Bridge was similar in shape of sorts, well at least it was till the late 1990's when a massive piece of it fell into the ocean...Still worth a visit though. The arch came next and I am not sure whether I would visit it again. It was starting to get very samey along the coast line of Australia. Once you have seen one arch way you have pretty much seem most of them.
We pressed on to Port Campbell and picked up yet MORE visitors maps of the region with different things scribbled on and then went about our way to the Loch Ard. The Loch Ard is famous for a shipwreck which happened off the coast of Victoria back in the 1800's where only two people survived the wreck. The site has a viewing point of the geology of the landscape and also a cemetery where plaques were placed in memory of those lost at sea. Apparently only 4 bodies were ever recovered despite rumours that at least a further 11 were washed up in a cavern further down the coast. We made sure we saw everything anyway which was a nice walk along the sunny but windy coastline.
The next stop is one of the most famous along the Great Ocean Road, the 12 Apostles. I could not get over how touristy this place really was despite it being winter. There were people everywhere. A little fact about the 12 Apostles is that there are not actually 12 of them. Due to the force of the sea and the constant changing of the landscape they are disappearing. The last one collapsed back in 2005 bringing the total now to just 8. We took some OK pictures but nothing to write home about it would have been better if we could get down on the beach next to them like we did next at Gibson's steps with some other limestone towers. It was nice to get so close but yet again with so many people around you struggled with it being so busy.
Our trip has been full of many detours and today was going to be yet another day where we went to extra places. Today we took a detour to GORGE Chocolates. It was a nice little farm which has been running for over 2 years producing specialist chocolates. My favourite (which I thought might taste foul) was the raspberry liquorice covered in chocolate. Have to be in the mood for it though as can be quite sickly! Next up we went to yet ANOTHER cheese farm. Free cheese samples what can I say lol. They were called Apostle Whey Cheeses. They had some very nice stuff, shame once again I couldn't buy any unless I was prepared to eat a whole block in one sitting....um no.
After stuffing ourselves on cheeses it was time to find somewhere to stay and we chose to go to one of the many FREE campsites in Otway National Park at Johanna Beach. Along the way though we did take in a quick walk through Melba Gully before it got too dark to see anything!
Tomorrow I am heading over to the Otway Fly but only to do the Treetop walk and not the zip lining...not made of money just yet!
In the picture I am standing at the 12 Apostles.
