Today we went from the Grampians down to Port Fairy on the coast of Victoria. I am not sure why we went there but we did and we picked up a load more maps and information from the visitors centre.
After discovering there wasn't much to see we went on our way towards Warrnambool, calling by the Tower hill reserve first. The Tower hill reserve is a small park between Port Fairy and Warrnambool. It has a small animal reserve and a hill you can climb to see the view, we went for the view. You could see out across the countryside to the sea and see some marvellous lakes heading away from the sea. It was only a quick stop on route really.
Back on the road again and we arrived in Warrnambool. Warrnambool is famous for the whale sightings off of the coast and at this time of year it's the mother and baby whales you can see. The guy at the visitors centre was nice enough to tell us all the spots you could see them as well as the main 'touristy' one that most people go to but we would go there later after going to Cheese world in Allansford first. Cheese world is the biggest producer of butter and cheese in this part of Victoria. We went there mainly for the free cheese tastings and of course to try a malty milkshake! The cheese was gorgeous. The lady was kind enough to let us try it early instead of waiting for the tour time to come around. I think my favourite one was the cheddar with garlic and pepper....Mmmm. My least favourite was the chilli cheese...one little bite and my mouth was aflame! Bea found this funny of course lol. After the cheese explosion we went and grabbed a malty milkshake, which was also very nice but way too much of it. All I could taste was malty milk for hours afterwards!
Back in Warrnambool, we went to Logan's Beach to see if we could spot some whales. Within about 20 minutes there was one on the left of us which we stood there watching for almost an hour. We did go to another place as well and spotted a few little ones off of the coast before hitting the road and starting our tour of The Great Ocean Road to Melbourne.
We had planned to go straight to Peterborough to camp for the night but stopped at the Bay of Islands and Bay of Martyr to see the most amazing end of a sunset across the ocean. Perfect end to today, tomorrow sees us pressing on towards Port Campbell and getting as far as maybe Apollo Bay. looking forward to Otway National Park and their adventure called the Otway Fly! You may have noticed that in this entry the spelling of Warrambool is spelt differently in different parts...the Internet keeps telling me it's spelt differently so being on the fence I've included both!
Yes I am hugging a giant malty milkshake in this photo lol.
