This morning I drove to the Otway Fly and got there so early it wasn't even open yet! It was just me going round so Bea waited for me in the cafe. I walked in and the trees were of an amazing size, I am sure there are bigger elsewhere but none I'd seen so far. I got to walk through the base (play with the plastic dinosaurs meant for kids lol) before going up into the treetop walk. The platform took you up to 33m high and a further tower which went up to 46m high. Now I know it's all structured and will not fall down but it still had me worried that it was moving or that it would break or that the tower was swaying in the wind or something. What made it worse was the suspended platform which had nothing supporting it underneath just dangling there. Apparently it could take 24 tonnes of weight or 14 elephants but I don't care it still seemed dodgy! I came back and we both had a coffee before moving on.
We were headed down wind to the Cape Otway lighthouse but first we took a detour and went on a little walk to Triplet falls near the top of Otway National Park. It was a nice 1 hours walk to the waterfalls. The drive to Otway lighthouse was a bit different. I decided to take a track which looked like a shortcut...I was sliding about more than the road to Lake Ballard! The only difference being the giant hillsides I could have rolled down into. Whoops. We eventually made it to the lighthouse in one piece anyway. The lighthouse is one of Australia's most significant lighthouses. Built back in the 1800's it is still functional today. Well...sort of. I asked the guy in the lighthouse and he said that due to money cuts there is now a little beacon on the front which automatedly powers a light as it as cheaper but the lighthouse still works if they were to use it again. And you know why? The lens inside...British engineering shipped all the way from the UK!! Take that! The lighthouse was nice but for something so significant to that part of Australia I seriously thought it might be bigger. Oh well.
Next up we went driving towards Apollo Bay, but before we even made it out of the area we stopped to see loads and loads and loads of wild koala in the trees over the road. We got so close to one he was literally hanging on a tree branch staring at us from about 3ft above us! So cute! So massive too! The drive to Apollo Bay was quick and we soon discovered that there is actually nothing to do in Apollo Bay. The beach was out of bounds due to some broken stairs so we left and started the drive towards Lorne. We did ask if there was anything to see but the lady said no because on that stretch of road it's usually the road as it goes so close to the cliffs and the sea. And she was right. It was so close to the sea. I started to get a little bit annoyed though as the maps were not accurate. We spent ages looking for a campsite and a road which was on the map but just wasn't there in reality. We found it eventually just outside of Lorne but by god at that point I was composing a letter to the tourism board about their maps inside my head lol. The campsite is ok, bit creepy but otherwise alright. I keep joking to Bea about it looking like a prospective murder site, guess that's kind of mean really lol.
Tomorrow we will punt it from Lorne all the way into Melbourne! Finally getting to Melbourne where some sort of normality will resume after I sell my car, find somewhere to live and get a job to earn some money. Not necessarily in that order lol.
