I left Claudia a couple weeks ago to continue on her travels around Australia and I can honestly say I am going to miss her, she always had a smile even when things weren't great for any random reason. Now back to what I have been doing. I have spent the last 2 weeks in Waikerie in South Australia. The place is a nice little town which is one of the biggest orange producing places in Australia. The reason I have spent this time here is because I got a job on a farm picking oranges and was staying in a house with 5 other people who are also working.
I wish I could say that working here was fun or that I had a good time in Waikerie but to be honest that would be a lie. The first couple days were fine, we realised it was hard work and were going to struggle with the heat but we had no idea how horrible it would be working there.
The money wasn't great but we were qualifying for our visa time, the company was lovely, owned by a really nice couple but it wasn't them that was the problem. The problem was the guy that recruited us to Waikerie. He shouted at us constantly telling us we weren't doing good enough, going to get fired for not fulfilling a quota of orange bins, if we annoyed him he would report us to immigration and we wouldn't get our next visa no matter what we did. People cannot work under those conditions and it took almost 10 days for us to discover it was all lies and he could do absolutely nothing to us. By then I think we had all had enough and all of us are leaving. Which is a shame as the company gave us the jobs back but he kicked us out of our accommodation.
The only good time I had visiting Waikerie was on my days off waking around looking at things and spending time with the other backpackers in the house. Lesson learnt I guess...if something seems too good to be true then it probably is. Still I am off to Adelaide tonight and will be starting work somewhere else on Monday! Live and learn lol. I have one thing driving me at the moment and it's looking forward to a new adventure.
The picture is of all of us sat waiting for Ray to come and pick us up on our last day working the block.
