Well I have now been living and working in Echunga, South Australia for the past 3 weeks at a small herb and vegetable farm run by a very nice family. There are between 5 and 9 of us here at any given time working on the farm as woofers earning our visa days to stay in Australia for a second year. Woofers are people who are willing workers on organic farms which means you work in exchange for your food and accommodation instead of being paid any wages. It's not ideal for me as it means I don't earn any money but at the same time I am not spending any money either!
The group of people here seem nice and the work varies from easy to back breaking (weeding lol) but everyone has a good sense of humour so even the most boring of jobs can be fun - washing spinach for example lol.
The backpackers all stay in a small cottage dubbed the "yellow cottage" just across from the main house where Judith, Sven and their 3 children live. The days consist of 6 hours of work and an hours lunch break with Sundays being our day off. It is amazing though how boring the time off can be. Once you sleep in for a couple of the days you begin to wonder what else there is to do here. The first week I was here a group of us went to the pub in Handorf on the Saturday night and I think we must have walked into every single one till we found somewhere that played music. Well...that was after we finished taking random pictures on the high street lol. A beer later (as I was driving) and a game of I have never...I know a few too many intimate things about the people I am working with lol.
A few days later it was Judith's birthday and we were all invited for dinner at her house. It started off with one glass of 'champagne' in which Bea and I took the first photo of the night and quickly descended into drinking everything that was free taking more photos with each new glass. Bea made a lovely Tiramisu (she's Italian so it was done properly lol) in which a few of us proceeded to eat through during the course of the night. Whoops there goes the eating sensibly!
I had a few minor mishaps during the course of the following two weeks on the farm. 1. I discovered my car battery was flat (well I assumed since it wouldn't start) despite me starting it every day I'd been here. 2. I'd tried to get everyone to do some phys by making a circuits session for them and they were ready to kill me before we did the first round of the circuit and 3. I went on the Trampoline and almost knocked myself out causing myself to have a massive bruise on my head to which I then didn't feel well for the following couple days and thus assume I had a slight concussion lol. I joked with Sven though that Matthew hit me when we were bouncing around hahaha.
Things are funny here on the farm though, the jobs might not be the most interesting all of the time but we have a good chuckle at some random things during the day. I have tried to keep myself busy by watching old movies and learning new things. I've started doing phys again as I cannot have Stephen fitter than me when we next see each other lol. Bea and I took a 5km walk the other day and went and visited the Jupiter Creek gold diggings in which you can walk into a gold mining tunnel in the pitch black and out the other side. It was a little bit creepy and thank heavens she had a light on her iPhone lol.
Joe has also started teaching us self defence classes, I've started running again and I am also learning to pay guitar in my spare time. Hopefully to play some favourite songs before too long! I'm also looking at doing some woofing in exchange for horse riding lessons but watch this space for that one lol.
The picture is of me climbing up the ladder from the mining tunnel at the Jupiter Gold Diggings.
