This morning we got up really early to get to Kings Canyon. The drive was amazing, just seeing the sunrise come up along the highway. Not that any of the passengers saw it since they were all asleep. But I saw some wild horses and camels at the side of the road too. We made it to the canyon and had breakfast before starting the rim walk. It's about 6km but you have to do it early or they close it due to high temperatures. It can get to over 40 degrees at Kings Canyon.
We had breakfast and packed our bags for the walk. The beginning of the walk is a small ascent up to the canyon and the views are just amazing. It was such a clear day that you could see for miles. Not possible to see Uluru from here as its too far away lol.
Claudia and I were taking it steady and not in any hurry to rush about but the boys were gone, we knew they'd be waiting for us at the end of the walk. We managed to catch up with them and they were climbing on the rocks and some random tour guide had a go at us for climbing off of the path. I don't speak German but Claudia told me what they said about her afterwards and it wasn't pleasant. A while later though we caught one of her people climbing up on the rocks and Claudia heard her say get down from there, usually I don't care but I have just had a go at some other people...the cheek of it!
We carried on walking and got to a point where you could go down into the canyon into a place called The Garden of Eden. It was a nice little green place with a swimming hole at the bottom, we established very quickly the boys didn't bother going there or they'd be in the water still. It was so peaceful down there, I think we both could have just laid down and gone to sleep. Some guy had it a bit rough though, he hit his head on the stairs and split his head open and started bleeding everywhere! Made me feel slightly sick that's for sure!
The walk seemed never ending but we made it to the end and found the guys sat down in the rest area waiting for us to drive them to Uluru. Looking bored as usual.
The drive was another long one, and with silence in the car it was starting to annoy me about the passengers. We stopped at a station called Curtin Springs which has a big cattle station attached to it and my wallet had a heart attack...$2.11 per litre of unleaded! You're having a laugh aren't you! After that we finally made it to Uluru in time for sunset. I knew it was big but never thought it would be that large lol. It was nice to see the colours change during the hour or so we were stood there taking random pictures with Claudia's Smurf and my Team GB lion lol.
The way back wasn't so good though. We were starting to have trouble with the boys. They refused to speak to me in the car, only spoke German and then started playing some very suspect music which they quickly turned off when Claudia came over. I was in tears later on that night, I agreed we'd give them one more chance and then just have to let them out at the next service station. I was starting to wish I had stayed in Darwin. I didn't want to drive this massive distance in a hurry and we had agreed before we left, if you take travellers into your car and they agree on a time limit they shouldn't try to hurry you through everything all the time. I guess this is a painful lesson to be learnt. Never mind, off to climb Uluru tomorrow and then to see the Olgas, should be a better day.
