I was still feeling a little bit iffy today but had to get out and see something, so Ish, Riccardo, Vicky, Jim and I hired bicycles and went two wheeling across the island. The first hurdle was finding a decent bike...breaks, good tyres and of course a girly basket where on the shopping list! We cycled off in the afternoon towards the bridge which links Don Deth with Don Khone, after paying 20,000 kip for a day pass we were on our way to finding the waterfall.
It would seem nothing is signposted very well so I believe we took the longest route round but got there in the end. The scenery was lovely, green rice fields with the occasional water buffalo walking across your path and scorching hot sun beating down on us. It seems to get much hotter in the afternoon and then die off once it rains. The waterfall was wonderful, not the biggest I had seen already but the sheer power of the water crashing over the rocks and spray hitting us from the view point was very refreshing. Apparently there is a beach close to here so we went walking to find it.
I am not sure we found the correct beach...it was just this little area of sand but we went anyway. Ish and Riccardo had already been in the water and said it was nice so Jim, Vicky and I went in. They were right the water was nice and warm and it was nice to say I had been swimming in the Mekong. However...I swam out a little bit further and then couldn't get back. The river current was taking me out towards the raging river where I was probably going to drown. Jim stepped in and came to get me, only to get sucked in by the current himself. It was about 5 minutes before we both managed to cling onto the rocks and pull ourselves back in. Lesson learnt? When there are signs up further along which say danger no swimming...damn well read and listen!
With todays excitement over and returning our bicycles we went to a little bar on the riverside to watch the sunset before exchanging information with each other as some people are leaving tomorrow. No doubt I will bump into some of them again on my travels if we're all doing similar routes but guess we'll see.
