Woke up nice and early to discover there was no water and no power to the island, oh well hopefully it'll be back on by the time I come back. After getting to the Kayaking place on time, we were running late, but breakfast was included so it didn't matter too much. We were equipped with a helmet (which was too big) a life jacket and a water proof bag (second time lucky fingers crossed). There wasn't really a safety briefing just a few quick instructions on how to use the paddles to change direction of the Kayak...then we were off!
Padding away enthusiastically I soon realised...I needed to paddle slower or I am going to be hanging less than half way round! I was sharing with one of the guides as there was an odd number of us on the trip and I couldn't help but get the feeling that sometimes I was paddling alone...perhaps it was when he was talking on his mobile phone behind me maybe? Our first stop was at the waterfall which I had already visited (D'oh) a couple days earlier and a short walk to the correct beach! There I made a little friend in a little ginger cat who tried to get into the Kayak with us as we left from the shore. I was grateful for the small walking break in between each paddle as I was still tired.
I started to chuckle to myself as I could hear Banjo music inside my head and almost wanted to start dinging it out loud but I was suddenly aware of the age difference of the group and just didn't think they'd get it lol. We made it to a little restaurant on the Laos / Cambodia border and had lunch where we were going to see the Pink Dolphins bobbing up and down in the river. We didn't see too many so the guide took us out on the water and we saw a whole pack of them swimming about, some of them coming really close to my Kayak as we paddled on. All of a sudden the guide told me to pull over on a little beach...we were taking on water...and slowly sinking! 10 minutes later, it was a race to catch up to everyone else who seemed to be miles ahead in the distance. I will admit that I had lobster legs by this point and no amount of sun cream was going to save me now!
Our next stop was at the biggest waterfall in Asia, not the tallest but the widest. This was after trying to load 6 Kayaks onto the roof of a Tuk Tuk which was quite entertaining! A French guy wanted to look like he was paddling next to the Dolphins on this sign so he got his friend to take a picture whilst we threw bottles of water over him...very random indeed!
After a short ride to Ban Nakasang we got back into the Kayaks and paddled back to Don Deth. It was a nice day and I know I am really going to hurt tomorrow! Bumped into Darren and Shelly again and went to dinner with them before retiring as I just couldn't keep my eyes open! Leaving Don Deth in a couple of days to travel back to Vientiane before starting a mammoth journey to Hanoi (Vietnam).
