After completing some admin round the town I bumped into a couple guys I met last night in the Drop Zone, Shaun a Saffa doing TEFL in Thailand and 'Dave' (real name Jay but we went for a Trigger moment so now he's Dave) and went for a drink with them whilst we waited for our buses. After a couple hours of them apologising for leaving me last night with the weirdest guy I've met so far, we went our separate ways.
My bus arrived late (as usual) and about 16 of us (and bags) got loaded into this pick up truck with seats that weren't attached to the bus itself. Shrieking round corners we made it to the bus station. Oh yes...we were going on a VIP sleeper bus to Pakse! Now...I'd heard about these buses but never seen one and just like the trains they are packed to the ceiling with beds. Each space has room for two people and unless you'd booked with a friend you were going to get up close and personal with someone you didn't know. Luckily I was sharing with a German girl called Vicky. We also soon befriended a guy called Jim from the next berth over who was very lucky and had two spaces to himself!
How I managed to get to sleep I do not know, what with the rocking of the bus, the random sharp slamming of the breaks and the broken air-conditioning blasting full in my face, somehow I managed a few hours sleep. I did awake in the night, I saw the stars shining in the sky lighting up the mountains and for those brief moments it made the cramped journey worthwhile.
Arriving in Pakse we were told that our bus ticket needed to be changed for another at a different office (sounds rather suspect here) and Vicky and I were slowly bundled on a crap mini coach which was to take us to Ban Nakasang (the boat port to Don Deth). A few hours later, several stops including one to put air in the tyres (slightly worrying) and a bump start we made it to Ban Nakasang. Tired and still feeling a little sick, I was relieved that both Vicky and I had the boat journey included in our tickets whilst everyone else was fuming at the bus station. A short boat ride later and we were on Don Deth looking for accommodation. Vicky and I decided to go to Mr B's bungalows right on the sunset side of the island. Very basic accommodation but a hammock on the river front...right on!
We'd met some Americans on the journey and went to dinner with them, a Dutch girl and 2 Irish guys we picked up on the way. Food was the last thing on my mind and I was intently listening to an American guy telling me that Australians are more obnoxious...go figure. Before feeling very unwell and having to get some sleep. It took about 18 hours to get here, I deserve to go to bed! Tomorrow hopefully I will be a little better and get out and see some of the islands.
