What a day. After an early start it was straight into the bus. We hit a bit of traffic so we were late arriving at Vesuvius. It was about twelve fifteen when we arrived. We had until one thirty to make it to the top and down again. An elevation of about three hundred meters. That's not the distance to the top, that's the elevation.
Well I did it. I have photographic proof so say so. But boy was it hard work. There were times I didn't think I'd make it. Only pride kept me going. The view from the top wasn't quite work the effort in going, but the bragging rights and the memories were, so I guess I can survive the aching muscles.
The forty minute trip to Pompeii wasn't really long enough to rest my poor legs before we were walking around Pompeii. I have rather mixed feelings about Pompeii. I think because I was expecting more of a slice of life in ancient times and what we got was just more ruins. Joan, a woman on our trip, who is very well traveled has been to Pompeii before and she said there was less to see this time as most of the relics had been moved to museums.
On the other hand it was still pretty incredible. Maybe if I hadn't gone in grumpy and tired I would have enjoyed it more. Also the weather wasn't the best. We thought it was going to rain the whole day. For Vesuvius that was good. Any warmer would have been unbearable and if it had rained there's no way we'd have had the footing to get up or down. For Pompeii, though, we could have done with some more sun.
We made it to Sorrento around six and dinner was at seven thirty so plenty of time for a snooze. Bec called the shower first and my luggage didn't get brought up until just after seven so no time for me. Dinner was fantastic, as usual and afterward there was an optional show with the dance Tarantella. Bec was really keen to go but it's not really my thing so I went back to our room for a shower and an early night.
Here's hoping tomorrow isn't quite such a work out.
