Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hi,
It is our last day in NZ today, we will be sad to leave as we have had such an amazing time. However, we cant really be too sad as we are moving on to Australia this afternoon - am really excited!!!
We have spent the last few days in Christchurch which has been nice. We had two sad goodbyes though as we had to say goodbye to travel buddy Loz on Saturday and to our faithful car on Sunday - two cruel blows!! We all felt sad when Loz went as he is a little bundle of enthusiasm! Also because we had had such a good time travelling the south island and had packed so much in to such a small space of time we all felt like it was the end of our holiday too!!
NZ over Easter weekend is not the most exciting place in the world to be! In contrast to a bank holiday weekend at home where it is just an excuse to get drunk, it is very sedate here. We had planned a big night out for Loz's last night on Friday. However our plans didn't come to much as every bar in NZ is closed on Good Frida, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday! We trawled round the streets for a while like 14 year old chavs in the hope that something was open but it was a fruitless task! So our 'big night' ended up with us playing monopoly in the hostel instead - crazy stuff!!
Apart from that crazy activity we have had a nice time in Christchurch looking around the shops, going round on the tram and up on the Gondola to see the sites of Christchurch from above.
We had a lovely day yesterday, we went to the nearby town of Akaroa. We got a bus tour there which was really interesting as the driver was a fountain of knowledge and told us loads. We had a few stops on the way including one at a cheese factory which wasnt exactly my cup of tea!! The views were gorgeous on the way, Akaroa is situated on the Banks peninsula and is a harbour caused by a volcanic eruption so it looked really spectacular. The town itself has French heritage so all the shops and hotels had french names which was fun. It was a really pretty little town and was definitely worth a visit. We went on a harbour cruise which was fun as it was a really gorgeous sunny day so the views were amazing. We saw some penguins, seals and some dolphins. The dolphins were Hector dolphins which are only found in NZ so it was really cool to see them. They are really cute because they are quite small with a little rounded dorsel fin.
Last night as we couldn't go out for drinks on our last night because of the bank holiday trading laws we treated ourselves to a lovely meal and a few glasses of wine to toast the end of our holiday in NZ!
