The storm had passed it still felt warm but quite cloudy so we decided to go to the Maracana stadium to do the tour, it is one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world! The stadium opened in 1950 to host the FIFA World Cup, in which Brazil was beaten 2–1 by Uruguay in the deciding game, in front of 199,854 spectators. The stadium has seen plenty of crowds of more than 100,000 until the terraced sections have been replaced with seats over time, its original capacity has been reduced to the current 78,838. The stadium is mainly used for football matches between the major football clubs in Rio de Janeiro, including Flamengo, Fluminense, Botafogo and Vasco da Gama. In 2014 the World Cup final was played there & in 2016 the Olympic final. The area was really run down & the stadium was like a huge concrete dome, the tour was pretty basic & disappointing as we expected to see more medals & silverware but it was mainly just bits of memorabilia. We went to Botofogo area after where we looked around the shops & beach area, we had one of the best burgers in a smart burger place, we went to the havianas shop & indulged on flip flop heaven we bought for ourselves & presents too! Sugarloaf mountain was just at the end of the beach & the Christ redeemer statue on the hillside behind, wherever you were in Rio you had an amazing view. We got back to the hotel & had a few caipirinhas on the roof terrace. We had booked a city tour for the following morning to stop at all the sights we hadn’t seen yet so fingers crossed for the weather.
