The road trip has begun!!! Keltie, Amy and myself left queenstown a week ago, with the car fully loaden (an i mean really full with 2 board bags, 3 massive bags and a lot more!) and headed across to dunedin! However, even on our first day things did not go to plan! We spent the morning in the medical centre, because while celebrating our last night in Queenstown, Keltie drunkenly fell off the stage and could not walk! Turns out she badly sprained her ankle and was on crutches for the next week!! What a great start!
Due to the late start we arrived in Dunedin in the dark and had to set up our tent for the first time in the pitch black, and rain! it was quite funny, but we managed..while keltie sat in the car!! lol
Our first day in Dunedin we went to the Cadbury's Factory (oh my god..the smell of the chocolate was amazing!!) and the Speights Factory (the tour was quite dull, but the tasting was great! we all got hammered!). As Keltie couldn't walk, Amy and I went on a mission to find her a wheel chair and managed to succeed so she got pushed all the way round Dunedin by us....drunk!! Very trusting!
The next day we went to see the Moeraki Boulders (big round rocks on the beach!) which were actually quite cool, before we set off down the Catlins Coast. The Catlins was great..loads of really pretty scenary and seals, and sealions, but no penguins...we waited for them for about half an hour, but none showed!! We camped overnight at a campsite which we snuck into and hid our car and tent and pretended we were in the wilderness!!! it was soo much fun!! We are loving the camping and managing to cook sooo well on a single gas cooker!
The second day through the catlins was still really fun...there really are soo many sheep and then headed down to Invercargil and Bluff (the southern most point of NZ). We decided to stay in bluff and found a campsite that had open cabins so we let ourselves in, and were so excited as we had a bed for the night! Bluff turned out to be one of our best nights...basically its this tiny little fishing town with one road running through it! we decided to go for a drink in the afternoon at the pub....after being a little scared at first of the locals, everyone turned out to be really nice and we left the pub at about 9 (it shut then!) and headed to a houseparty at some local fishermens house! it was so random, but so much fun!!!
We started the drive up to Milford Sound, but decided to stop overnight about 90km from it at a really basic campsite where we paid $5 for the night (about 1 pound 50!!) we were literally in the wilderness and it was great! However, in the night it didn't stop raining...turns out our tent is not so waterproof...and us and all our stuff got soaking wet!!! We lay in bed all morning trying to ignore it, and hoping it would stop....it didn't so we had to pack up in the pouring rain!! Nice!
When we eventually got to Milford Sound though, it was great! It is such a pretty place with heaps of waterfalls and mountains and its amazing! We stayed with a couple of people who worked up the mountain, and ended up getting the boat cruise for free too which was wicked! It was such a nice day when we went on the boat and we went through waterfalls and we had dolphins swimming next to our boat!! it was awesome!
We then made our way back to Queenstown where we had one last night out before heading to Wanaka where we camped in a friends backyard!!! Today we are making our way to Franz Josef Glacier to do a trek...can't wait!!
All in all our first week has been amazing, and we are surviving camping most nights!!! Yay!! Sooo much fun!
