So...after another action packed week thought i'd fill you in on what we've been doing! We've been soo energetic this week its unbelievable!! We first went to Franz Josef Glacier. Unfortunately Keltie could not do the hike cause of her ankle, but Amy and I went on the three quarter day hike! It was amazing! Its so weird being in the middle of a mass of ice! It was soo pretty as it was really blue, and the guides had to cut steps into the ice as we went up and down! We also went through a cave which was just about big enough to fit through and you had to dangle down a rope to get down! V amusing, especially as you were surrounded by ice so everything around you was soo slippery so nothing to grip onto apart from this rope!! Such a wicked experience!
Next we headed up the west coast which is meant to be amazing...to be honest i think its a bit over rated! We drove through a few towns but didn't really feel the need to stop, and ended up treating ourselves to a hostel at Pancake rocks were...as you probably can guess...there are rocks that look like stacks of pancakes! They are actually quite impressive though, and after looking round them, we made pancakes at a picnic spot there! what else is there to do!!!
We then headed up to the north of the south island to Abel Tasman National Park. We decided to do the 51km coastal trek through the park...no idea why considering I hate walking and kelties ankle is messed up, but we thought it would be a good idea!! It was the funniest, prettiest, most depressing walk ever!! We did it over 3 days, and it was all along cliff paths so lots of steep hills into and out of bays! Our first day we got dropped off on a random beach with our 2 massive bags, a smaller bag and our tent (we felt like castaways!) what had we let ourselves into! We were told we had to cross 2 bays before high tide otherwise we would be stranded...this woman obviously thought we were fit and it would be no problem....huh..little did she know!! After a couple of hours walking with all our stuff we came across the first bay, and had to wade through thigh deep water to get across!! This was quite amusing!
After what seemed like a lifetime of more walking we came across the only pub in the national park, so stopped for a drink there-it would be rude not to!! The waiter there said that the second crossing we had to do was only a creek so we'd be ok....i don't think so! We arrived at the 'creek' at dark...and it turned out that the path turned into a river! No joke! We had no choice but to wait on the path until low tide...we arrived at 7pm..low tide was at 1am!! So we cooked our dinner on the path...then laid out our sleepingbags and tried to sleep on the rocky, dusty ground! It was so amusing! What was the funniest though was being woken up by a possum starting at us, and trying to get into our bag of fruit! We had no idea how to get rid of it, so we just watched it eat our food!!! Eventually the tide went out and we were able to cross and walk for another hour b4 reaching our campsite! It was the nicest time to walk as it was nearly full moon and soo cool!
The next days were hell in all honesty! the second day we walked for hours and hours and i thought i was going to die! my legs felt like they were going to fall off and my shoulders were going to crumble from the 1000kilo backpack! At least the scenary was nice! The worst point was walking though mud on the beach with snails in....it was gross! at least now we can laugh about it! Day three was all about getting back into town as quickly as possible...which wasn't that quick as we were all hobbling! However, we are soo pleased we did it and treated ourselves to a KFC when we finished. I don't think i'll be planning anymore treks in the near future!
We then stayed a night in Nelson before getting to ferry across to the north island. The ferry trip was soo random...we met a couple of kiwi's and ended up getting drunk in the boat bar with them!! Was really good fun! However, as the boat got in late, and we had no accomodation booked, we ended up sleeping in the car for the night...was a very uncomfortable sleep but we are now booked into a really nice hostel and on the search for work in Wellington!! I really like Wellington - its a really cool city with heaps going on! So now its just fingers crossed for the job hunt!
