It's so hard to stop myself to write a post. Here's my Indonesia post, compressed.
So we've been travelling Indonesia since August 11th and for me, it's the most versatile country I've ever been too.
We started our trip in Jakarta and stayed at an awesome hostel called Wanderloft. It was a capsule time hostel and we each had our own pod in the dorm. The hostel was really social and had a pool table, darts, a tv with films and sport and a mini kitchen. Jakarta however was a dive. Considering it's the capital city it was not at all appealing. The streets were dirty and filled to the brim with locals selling food and drink, people sat on Lino eating their food, creepy men socialising and a lot of motorbikes. There was also hardly anywhere to eat. Don't get me wrong they had the stalls selling white meatballs on sticks and a restaurant with its pre cooked food stacked in bowls at the window but we wanted something safe and wasn't risking food poisoning. We ended up ordering fried chicken and rice to our hostel from an an like Uber eats, it was actually really nice. We didn't really do a lot in Jakarta apart from a few museums and walk for miles looking for food. Our best day was spent in the hostel playing pool, watching films and eating dominos pizza! We left Jakarta by night train headed for Yogyakarta.
Our night train was basic however we did choose economy as it was cheapest. Our seat was basically a small bench facing another small bench and we were suppose to share one of these benches. Luckily nobody had booked the opposite one and we had one each, wasn't very comfortable at all.
We didn't spend very long in Yogyakarta. We arrived at 5am dropped our stuff at the hostel and rented a bike to go and see Borobadour temple. I've seen a lot of temples but these ones were different. They were so beautiful. The temple had a square base and went up in height by levels. All of the stupas had Buddha statues inside. Apparently if you can't reach the hand of the Buddha you can make a wish - we both made wishes :)
The next day we got a day train to Problobinggo. Again bench like seats faces another seat by this time there were 6 of us squeezed in! Luckily after a few hours most of the train got off and we moved to our own section. When we go to Probolinggo we got a taxi to our hotel. It was 7pm and dark and we were in a small town and the owner somehow managed to give our room away and told us we had no where to stay. We were not impressed! He took us to another hotel close by where the man didn't speak English and we had to pay more money - again not impressed.
We went to probbolingo to hike a volcano so we focused on that and organised a private car with some people from the hostel we were suppose to be staying at. We checked out our hotel at 2am and walked to the first hostel to drop our bags and get our car.
Mount Bromo was absolutely insane!! We hiked up the first mountain to find a spot for sunrise. The sky was clear and the stars were twinkling and bright. I even got to see a shooting star. When we got to the top it was quite busy so we walked down a little and found a spot with 3 other people. As the sun rose the clouds became visible and the light shon on the crater of Mount Bromo. Slowly, smoke drifted out as we sat in awe gazing at the picturesque scenery. It was stunning and so peaceful. After taking some photos we went back up to the top to find groups of people taking photos. We were so happy we choose a different spot for sunrise.
We headed back down to the car and he drove us to the base town of Mount Bromo. We read online there was a secret farmers path into the national park so we went to find it. We found a sign that said do not enter and knew we'd found our route. The rest of our group were scared and decided to go and pay the fee whereas we headed down the dirt road.
Luckily, we didn't get caught, the dirt road led into the Sea of Sands which is basically a desert made of volcanic ash. We walked towards the base of the volcano for about 30 minutes. We climbed down into what looked like a river bank created by hot lava and followed it to the volcano. It was unreal, it was like walking on another planet. The walls were high and all around you could see black ash and hear the deep roaring of Mount Bromo. After climbing the volcano and passing locals offering to take you up on their horses, we arrived at the crater. It was incredible. Looking down into a volcano while it roars and releases thick clouds of smoke is definitely an experience. Of course we decided to walk around the crater to get a better view. That's when my legs went jelly. Something about walking around an active volcano with no barriers whilst it sprays smoke and roars made me nervous.
Later that day we took a train to Bangyuangi, the closest town to Mount Ijen, our 2nd volcano we would climb. We ended up staying in a local families house in a small village. We rented a scooter and drove around exploring villages and stopping along the way. We found a local football match and stopped for a while. Obviously the attention turned to us as the only tourists about aha.
The Ijen climbed was really cool. What made it for us was our guide, a 52 year old local man named Adi who had worked in the volcano mining sulphur for 26 years. He was an actual legend. He guided us to the core of the volcano where we had to wear gas masks to stop us from choking on the sulphuric gas. Inside the volcano the fire shon a bright blue colour and sulphur dipped down the walls solidifying before the miners carted it away. It was sad to watch the them carrying 85kgs of sulphur in basket across their backs. One man showed us his shoulder which had been broken from the weight he had to carry. At the top, as the sun rose a acidic turquoise lake came into view. It was really beautiful to see.
After getting back to the village we grabbed our bags, dropped our bike back and headed for the ferry to Bali.
Next stop: The beach!
