Saint Emilion City Tour, started with a great view. A little history of the Bell Tower. Then to; collegiate Church & it's cloister, the great wall, the steep streets, the underground chapel, the natural cave, and yes the monolithic church. Inside the church the columns were unstable and American Express came to help. They sponsored the stabilizing of the main 4 columns holding the bell tower. This entire city is on top of stone quarries. Learned a lot of history from Romantic to gothic with every step we took. From the fertility chair to the fact that only bones were buried not bodies. Had a pizza in the city centre. Then drove through the vineyards to Chateau Cantenac. Adrienne Roskam greeted us in English. She is from California. Did her internship here and married into the family. There are 1001 Chateau in St Emilion and only 100 do wine tasting. She started by telling us about the land and the grapes. Learned why there are roses at the row end and what a brick is. We even enjoyed tasting the grapes from the vine and fresh fig from a tree. Continued to the concrete vats and stainless steel tanks for the wine process. Learned Then onto the cellar for storage filled with oak barrels. Last to the tasting. Wonderful two hours spent learning. Went to La Toque Cuivree to taste canele cake made with the waste of wine making.
