Beautiful this land is, but bloody tough to survive in.The ruined house of the Lewis family here is testominy to that. They struggled for 12 years before admitting defeat and heading for some other hills! They named the near by spring, in Afrikaans, Twyfelfontein = "Doubtful Spring". I am not sure that you can ever sleep easy knowing that your only source of water might just give up the ghost without warning.
It is here too that local San communities have come for millenia. It was long believed that the hills were the portals to the spirit world and where their shaman could communicate in that "other world". Modern methods have dated the paintings and petroglyphs up to 6000 years ago. Walking here, in the quiet of the morning, with nothing but the whistle of the breeze through the rocks, it is not hard to imagine the power that lies around awaiting a summoning!
