Some says that once you have seen the seal colonies on Pelican Point, there is no need to see the Cape Cross seal colony. We totally disagree. You cannot possibly imagine what 200,000 seals looks like, smells like or sounds like. Until you get there. Even the drive up to Cape Cross is special in itself.
The landscape is so totally alien here, it would make the perfect place to make sci-fi movies. The landscape changes, but doesn't really. "Campsites" on this stretch of coast are known by their distance from Swakopmund.Mile 7, Mile 45, Mile 104 are all great fishing spots (if this is your thing…you have to be a seriously dedicated fisherman to endure the wrath of your wife for spending her leave at some of these places!)
You smell them before you see them! There is not much that prepares your nose for this sort of assualt. One poor Spanish lady had tears in her eyes and a few plugs of cotton wool up her nose! Breathing through the mouth makes it bearable! But what a sight to behold. 200,000 cape fur seals all packed together. And most of the males are away at sea! The colony expands hugely when they come to mate! And with them comes a massive increase in noise. How will the lassies know that they are around unless they buff their chests and proclaim their greatness?
This is truly a place where you can spend a whole day just watching these creatures go about their business!
