August 26 (Saturday)- INVERGORDEN, SCOTLAND
Today Donna and I going on a shore excursion including Cawdor Castle and Gardens.
We will be traveling along the outskirts of Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, along Cromarty Firth. In Shakespeare's "Macbeth" King Duncan is said to have been murdered at Inverness Castle.
The Battle of Culloden between the Jacobites and the government was fought here in April 16, 1746. Stone cairn raised on the property and red and blue flags mark the sides. Cawdor Castle was built in 1370 (!) when the Thane of Cawdor had a dream to load a donkey with gold and let it run freely, and wherever the donkey lay down was where he should build his new home. The donkey laid down under a holly tree and it now stands at the heart of the castle. The walled gardens date to 1600. The Castle remains in the same family to this day.
We passed a LOT of whiskey distilleries.
