Today we went to the Dachau Concentration Camp.
We woke up to a very damp, dark and overcast morning. We needed to be at the Munich train station by 9am so we caught a cab and got there with plenty of time to spare. The town of Dachau is only 25 mins by train but is a world away.
After getting off the train, we caught a bus to the camp. Steady rain was falling, there was no wind and it was very cold. The conditions were quite fitting for the location.
We went inside the camp and we were amazed by the size of the grounds. We were told there was room for 50,000 prisoners in the counting yard. There was a couple of reconstructed dorms to show us what the living conditions were like, however nothing but the foundations of the other 30 buildings were left.
We went through the museum and then had a tour of the Crematorium and Gas Chambers.
Dachau was more of a concentration camp than an extermination camp (such as Aushwitz), however many people still lost their lives here, which was evident by the 5 incinerators.
After the tour we headed back to Munich. We had acouple of drinks and some tea at the hotel, before heading to bed.
