Our Travels
Unfortunately we didn't sleep well after the problems of last evening and spending a good deal of the night awake and worrying, but one benefit was that we were up early and had breakfast before the main rush started. Even so there were still no spoons! My last opportunity to have curry and hoppers for breakfast so I made the most of it.
As we weren't going to be leaving until late in the evening we decided to treat ourselves to a late checkout. It took us about an hour to arrange this which was a little frustrating but this is Sri Lanka, after all.
It was time to make a trip all the way back over to the stadium to the police station in that district in order to report the theft of Simon's BlackBerry. No chance of making things easy for the victim of crime in this part of the world! As luck would have it our new friend, Siri the tuk tuk driver, was waiting outside the hotel looking for business and was able to find the right place to go. There were plenty of police in the police station but none of them seemed very keen on doing anything to help, in fact the senior officer was reading the newspaper. Everything is very slow and laborious as everything is written down by hand and there are no computers to be seen, only an old-fashioned type writer. After about an hour spent hanging around they decide that it will be necessary to come all the way back again in the evening to collect the report. I guess they hope we won't bother, and we probably wouldn't except that BlackBerries are pretty expensive and we need the police report if we are to have any hope of claiming on our insurance.
Luckily Siri had waited around and was ready for the return trip to the hotel. With the packing almost done we went down to the pool for a couple of hours of relaxation enjoying the serenity of looking out over Beira Lake, watching the bird life and sipping a gin and tonic too. Afterwards we popped into the basement shopping arcade and bought ourselves a couple of official ICC England T20 shirts. At Sri Lankan prices of around £8 each they are a real bargain and may come in useful some other time, maybe at the Cricket Sixes in a couple of week's time in Hong Kong!
Before checking out we treated ourselves to the High Tea buffet in the Lobby. Lots of delicious treats and we ate far too much, of course!
After checking out it was time to make the trip back to the police station and Siri was waiting. What a palaver! At the police station the senior officer said that the report was done but he couldn't find it! Oh no! After a long wait in the crime room looking at the old furniture, crumbling walls and exposed wires the report suddenly turned up and was handed over for a fee of 25 rupees. Another hour wasted and time to get back to the hotel with only a short time to spare before we had to leave for the airport.
Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and we have enjoyed our trip but it is quite hard going at times!
