Our Travels
After a leisurely day catching up with work and spending some time by the pool it was, once again, time to make our way to the Premadasa stadium for the second semi-final of the of the World Twenty20 cricket tournament.
By now we were becoming experts at hailing a three wheeler tuk tuk and negotiating a price with the driver and we were soon on our way to the ground. The traffic was really busy as we got closer to the ground. Surrounded by vehicles coming from all directions which frequently miss you by a hair's breadth it is a case of hold on tight and hope for the best! Our driver was very skilled though and was able to weave in and out with what seemed to be the greatest of ease.
The driver dropped us near the ground and, as before, security checks took place in the street some way away from the ground itself. Once again they waved the men through with scarcely a look but searched all the women very carefully ... why is that, I wonder?
We arrived just as the match started. As we passed the gate on the lower concourse (still locked, as yesterday) we were able to see the small place where people had been squeezing through the day before and were really glad that we hadn't tried it ourselves. We found ourselves a place to sit on the step and had quite a reasonable view. The West Indies had won the toss and chosen to bat and already they were totting up quite a score. The Windies had an amazing innings and, as we watched, fours and sixes were coming all the time. The official dancers had there work cut out to keep up with it!
The ground was not quite so busy as yesterday and many of the reserved seats were empty (so how come we couldn't get any?) although the un-reserved area was pretty full. We are watching others and getting the hang of things now and know what to do. You take the 'four' and 'six' cards when they hand them out. No, not to wave, silly! You fold them in half and sit on them!
All the Sri Lankans seem to be supporting the West Indies, for some reason, and the chant 'Chris Gayle, Chris Gayle' could frequently be heard rumbling around the ground. The score was creeping higher and higher and they ended with more than 200 on the board, the highest score of the tournament and leaving a massive run chase for the Australians. As the second innings got underway the Australians certainly tried to give it a go but unfortunately for them they lost their wickets much too quickly. In the end they were a long way short of the target and the West Indies go through to meet Sri Lanka in the final on Sunday. Just a thought, with the West Indies looking so strong today, when Sunday comes will the Sri Lankan fans be wishing they hadn't cheered for their would be opponents quite so hard after all?
One three wheeler ride later we were back at the hotel and hit the bar. Well it was Friday night after all! There was a very lively atmosphere in the lobby and live music too so a good way to end the evening.
