Our Travels
We woke late this morning and were playing catch up for the rest of the day. After a very late breakfast we took ourselves out for a walk and ended up down at the harbour where we admired the giant rugby ball we had heard so much about, and strolled past the cruise liners along the quayside.
There were several giant TV screens and the whole area was buzzing with crowds of people already collecting well ahead of this evening's game, just soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the open air entertainment. We sat down at an open air cafe to have a coffee and watch the antics of many fans in outrageous costumes, all having lots of fun.
On our way back to the hotel we were hailed by a friend who we see every year in Hong Kong for the 10's and 7's. He is out from England with his wife and just happened to see us pass by. What a small world it is!! We went up for a beer with him and his wife and were soon joined by another couple of friends from Hong Kong who had just arrived. It was great to see them all and certainly a surprise!!
By the time we left and got back to the hotel we had a quick turnaround before heading to Eden Park for the game. This time we were in the Eden Park Pavilion for our dinner and pre-match entertainment. It is a huge place and our dining room seated about 500 people although it was one of the smaller ones! Our pre-match discussion was provided by Andrew Mehrtens and Philippe Saint-Andre who had 68 caps for France and is due to take over as the next coach for France.
It was a long trek from the Pavilion to our seats and luckily we just managed to avoid a downpour on the way there. Happily the seats themselves were under cover. It was a sad night for Wales and for those of us supporting them. A controversial sending off early in the game left them a man down for almost the entire game. Nevertheless the Welsh played their hearts out and ended up only a point down. With just a little bit of luck on their side they could definitely have made it but it was not to be this time.
Back in the Pavilion we had some post match drinks and snacks and listened to the analysis of the game from our two experts. Andrew Mehrtens was quite passionate in his belief that the sending off was the wrong decision, but that is small comfort to the Welsh!!
After we left, for the first time, we took the hospitality bus back into town. There was a very cheerful crowd on board and it was good fun. As we walked the short distance back to the hotel it was surprising how busy everywhere still was in spite of the lateness of the hour. Not so unusual really when you consider that this is, after all, Saturday night in a capital city!!
