Right now we are lying on Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres (the island of women). The water is so unbelievably clear and inviting. While some people might call it Caribbean blue (looking at you PM) - we have all decided that it is in fact Caribbean turquoise... How did we get here you ask? Let me take you back...
Playa de Carmen is a beach town only an hour south from Cancun. As you're all aware, Justine's lover came to meet us there and the three of did a tour to see Chicken Pizza. Or what the locals call Chichen Itza. It was a long day but had some definite highlights. The early morning bus ride was worth it when we got to the Cenote for a swim. A lot busier than the previous ones we had visited. This Cenote was inside a deep cave (pictures in the Mexico album). Justine and I jumped off the edge as we are totally hard core and bad ass now and 5 metres doesn't phase us... (Alphonso opted for entering by the stairs...)
We had a great swim with 100 of our closest friends, but I tell you what. We were glad we could swim. The exit steps were pandemonium. Everyone was battling to get up them. You'd think there was a great white circling underneath! You'd get close enough, and then four people would swim over the top of you in their life jackets. Justine and I thought we were going to have to climb up the vines to get out!
Chichen Itza was next. This Mayan structure represents the calendar. And the maths/numbers on it is pretty incredible. I won't explain it to you for two reasons...
1. I might get it wrong and then you'll never believe another word I write.
2. You can google it...
We had a tour around this little city and could have sworn that Louis (our guide) said that the Mayans worshipped Chuck Norris... But there must have been a language barrier or we misheard. But I'm rolling with it! It was also at this point when I noticed the French bloke in our tour group had great white tattooed on his leg. I turned to Justine and started quoting Bruce from Finding Nemo and then suddenly, we were the naughty kids up the back being highly immature. Probably not surprising to any of you that we worked with.
After we farewelled Alphonso, let me rephrase, after Justine and Alphonso had an emotional farewell and I waved, we got on the bus and headed to Cancun. Our hostel is full of lively people and we had an entertaining evening watching some samba-ing and maybe some people having a bit too much of a good time. Which brings me back to today. We headed to Isla Mujeres with some of our new friends. It was a short ferry ride, but the Mexican crew didn't want us to be bored, so we were serenaded on the cruise over. This island is absolutely stunning. And we have had an amazing day under the palm trees drinking piña coladas (no rain though).
Tomorrow - we venture to Rio!
